For many domestic electricians, one of their biggest struggles is likely the admin or converting enquiries in to paid work. Most domestic electricians don't actually struggle getting the enquiries. It's the admin in the evening calling back those customers, replying to enquiries and qupting the ones they did get in touch with and all that is on top of organising the jobs
AI won't replace you as a qualified electrician (At least not for a long time) but it can however, help you do your best work, provide a better service to your clients and stop you running your business by memory.
Why Electricians Should Learn AI
Most electricians already have enough technical skill, you were taught to be an electrician. You probably weren't ever taught how to run a business!
Electricians are using AI and Automation to do some of those admin bits without them thinking about it, or using tools to speed up the process to get more done in a quicker time. It also allows you to do extra admin that WOW your customers. Trust me when I say not all your customers buy on price. If you can show more value and demonstrate you're a better company than your competitors then you can often charge more. No more competing on price.
Here's an example of using AI to quote.
I'm a huge advocate of ServiceM8 job management and I have an add-on that allows me to speak about the job, then AI converts the transcript to a proper written quote displayed exactly as I want it, it then pulls out the materials and uploads them straight in to the job card. This can often be done in 2 minutes in the van or even when walking around the property so when it comes to sitting down in the evening to send the quote you just need to have a quick glance over to check it and send it.
Another example is positioning yourself as a better electrician.
If a potential client calls you and another electrician to quote for some work, you both price the work at £500 but the other electrician sent a 'WOW Pack' and sent emails that build on their reputation and de-position yours, that potential customer will almost always go with the other electrician.
This doesn't need to be complicated and now their are younger 'techy' people coming in to the industry who are using AI and automation as standard. When used properly, AI helps electricians respond faster, look more professional and protect their time.
Broad Areas AI Training Should Cover
1. ChatGPT for Everyday Electrical Business Tasks
You know how I just spoke about this Addon that writes up my quotes for me? Well you can create a custom GPT to do a similar thing (although it won't update any other software). Once the GPT is trained, you too can speak about the job to chat GPT and then it will provide you with the written quote.
You can then ask it to search online for the materials and get prices for you.
2. AI prompting
Often electricians think AI is rubbish because they are bad at prompting. A prompt is basically the question or request you give AI, if you get it a vague request, you get a vague answer.
When prompting, try use this RCCB formula.
Role - Who is the AI acting like?
Content - What is the AI creating for you?
Context - Who are you and who is the content being delivered to?
Boundaries - What are the rules and limitations to be followed?
3. Admin and Workflow Automation
When I speak about AI training, I also mean automation.
Automation is getting software to handle repeatable steps without needing manual input every time.
'If X happens, then do Y'
Examples include:
1. A customer submits an enquiry form.
2. Their details go into a CRM.
3. The electrician/office receives a notification.
4. The customer gets an automatic reply.
5. A follow-up reminder gets created.
This type of system helps electricians avoid missed leads and forgotten follow-ups.
In my own electrical business I've got a simple automation set up so if I miss a phone call it texts the customers a link to an enquiry form. It helps me collect that customers information when I'm in a loft or up a ladder.
4. AI Accuracy and Professional Responsibility
Electricians must use AI with care.
AI can produce confident answers but they still need checking, if it's data you're using with AI, always ask for sources.
The electrician remains responsible for compliance, competence and professional judgement.
A simple rule works well: use AI for admin, structure, wording and systems. Use your electrical training for technical decisions.
Common Mistakes Electricians Make With AI
The first mistake is treating AI like Google. AI works best when it receives context, examples and clear instructions. Use the RCCB prompting method mentioned above.
The second mistake is copying generic AI content without editing it. Customers can spot AI generated content, as AI becomes more popular it is becoming much more obvious. Train AI with 'your voice' to get it sounding more like you.
The third mistake is trying too many tools at once. Start with one workflow, such as writing your quotes. Create a GPT for this task, test it and then improve it.
The fourth mistake is expecting AI to fix a messy business overnight. AI works best when paired with clear systems.
FAQs About AI Training for Electricians
What is AI training for electricians?
AI training for electricians teaches electrical contractors how to use AI tools to reduce admin, improve customer communication, create workflows and automate repetitive business tasks.
#Can electricians use ChatGPT for quotes?
Yes. Electricians can use ChatGPT to structure quote descriptions, write customer-friendly explanations and create follow-up messages. The electrician must still check pricing, technical details and compliance.
Will AI replace electricians?
No. AI cannot replace qualified electricians (at least not yet) carrying out installation, inspection, testing, fault finding or safety-critical work. AI is best used for admin, communication, planning and systems.
What is the best AI tool for electricians?
The best starting point for most electricians is ChatGPT or Claude, combined with a simple CRM or job management system like ServiceM8.
How can AI save electricians time?
AI can save electricians time by helping with quote writing, enquiry replies, job summaries, review requests, admin checklists, content planning and automated follow-ups.
Is AI training suitable for sole trader electricians?
Yes. Sole trader electricians often benefit because they handle the tools, calls, quotes, diary, invoices and customer messages themselves.
